Storage Tips: The Dos and Don’ts of Making Storage Work For You

Self-storage can be extremely convenient, but only if done properly.

Believe it or not, there are quite a few dos and don’ts when it comes to self-storage.

Pacific Rim Storage has a few storage tips on the dos and don’ts of making storage work for you.

Choosing A Storage Facility

When choosing a storage facility, you will want to put some time and effort into researching your options. Not all storage facilities follow the same guidelines or have the same safety measures, so it’s important to understand what you’re getting yourself into.

  • DO

Find a reputable storage facility that has great reviews, security features (fireproof concrete block construction, perimeter fencing, security lighting, surveillance cameras, computerized gate access), and is clean and well-maintained.

  • DON’T

Drive to whatever facility is closest to you and hope for the best. Proper security, knowledgeable staff, and cleanliness are key factors in keeping your possessions safe and protected.

Choosing A Storage Unit

You’ll also want to take the time to do some research regarding what type and size storage unit is best for what you’re storing. There is no sense in paying for the largest unit if you just have a few boxes to store!

  • DO

Define what it is that you need to store (vehicles, an RV, filing boxes, furniture, artwork, holiday decor), and then put some thought into what type and size storage unit you’ll need. For example, smaller units like a 4×6 will work for a few boxes or a few small furniture items, but you may need to size up to accommodate larger furniture items like beds or couches.

  • DON’T

Waste your money on a unit or space that is way too big for what you need to store.

  • DON’T

Try to squeeze too-big items into a too-small unit. You could risk damage to your items if you try to make something large fit in something small!

Storage Tips from Pacific Rim Storage - Take inventory of what you are packing

Packing A Storage Unit

So you’ve done your research and found the perfect storage facility and unit for your items, and now it’s time to pack your unit. Don’t rush this part! There are some key dos and don’ts to packing a storage unit.

  • DO

Give your items a quick clean before packing them away. You’ll appreciate this effort when you eventually take them out of storage.

  • DO

Take an inventory of what you’re storing. A few months down the road when you’re hunting for that one item you can’t find anywhere, you’ll thank us for this tip.

  • DO

Pack small items in boxes whenever you can. Pack furniture wrapped in quilts or drop cloths to protect it from dust. Make sure to drain any items that may have fluids in them (vehicles, RVs, appliances).

  • DO

Pack your unit to maximize space, but also with any items you may need to get to first at the front. For example, if you’re storing a number of items including holiday decor, and Christmas is coming up in a few months, you may want to put that holiday decor closest to the door.

  • DO

When moving your things in to your storage unit and the rain is falling outside be sure to wipe everything down to prevent any mold growth.

  • DON’T

Forget to pack your items properly. While there are many measures in place at reputable storage facilities to prevent damage to your items, there is only so much that they can do. Dust and moisture can cause damage to various items, so it’s important to ask the staff at your storage facility how best to pack your items to avoid this.

  • DON’T

Toss your items into the unit haphazardly. Not only will it be impossible to find anything if you need to access your items, but you could also subject your items to damage if they are not properly stacked.
